The third edition of Garner's Modern American Usage says that quote used as a noun is a casualism that “sounds more and more natural all the time, as it seems to predominate in spoken English. The third edition of Garner's Modern American Usage reflects several new practices. "Garner's Modern American Usage" is this oustanding work's second edition, now retitled after its author in view of the acclaim that the first edition earned. Revised and edited by Sir Ernest Gowers. Never mind the dilettantes with their misplaced reverence for The Elements of Style. Interestingly, contemporary usage has curtailed it further, into suffice to say, so that to some ears, the it sounds wrong. (Or at least, not as far as I can tell; I haven't tried to read all 876 pages of Garner's Modern American Usage.) This is to a large extent a result of where Garner's interests lie and what he is trying to do. Invariably inferior forms, for example, are now marked with asterisks preceding the term or phrase, a marking common in linguistics. My favourite usage guide is Bryan A.
